Short Stories
"Magnetism" by Sylvia Stepp — two figures flying mid-air; one in shades of red, one in blue, with yellow lightning.

Magnetism

Sylvia Stepp / January 12, 2024

From my senior year at Shrine High School. Two figures fly mid-air in opposing palettes of red and blue, faces twisted in terror, yellow lightning charging the space between — a study in attraction and opposition felt through the body.

Shrine High School Art – 2023/24

"Ripped" by Sylvia Stepp — humanoid figure with part of the face reversed, as if the image was torn and replaced.

Ripped

Sylvia Stepp / January 12, 2024

From my senior year at Shrine High School. A humanoid portrait with part of the face reversed, as if the image had been torn and put back wrong — a study in fractured identity.

Shrine High School Art – 2023/24

"Jade" by Sylvia Stepp — three views of Jade: confident with glowing gold marks, concerned, and dressed as a jester.

Jade

Sylvia Stepp / January 12, 2024

From my senior year at Shrine High School. Three facets of Jade — confident with glowing gold marks at her forehead and eyes, concerned, and dressed as a jester — an early character study in mood and persona.

Shrine High School Art – 2023/24

"Characters" by Sylvia Stepp — five characters standing in different stances on a green background.

Characters

Sylvia Stepp / January 12, 2024

From my senior year at Shrine High School. A lineup of five original characters in different stances against a green background — an early study in character design and silhouette.

Shrine High School Art – 2023/24

"Lynx Character Thumbnails" by Sylvia Stepp — six views of Lynx: spider suit, fashion designer, close up, and full body.

Lynx Character Thumbnails

Sylvia Stepp / January 12, 2024

From my senior year at Shrine High School. Character thumbnails exploring Lynx in six contexts — in a Spider-Man-inspired bodysuit, as a fashion designer, in street clothes, and in close-up — mapping one character across her heroic and civilian lives.

Shrine High School Art – 2023/24

"Maturity" by Sylvia Stepp — woman's reflection in the mirror shows a girl trying to appear older than she is.

Maturity

Sylvia Stepp / January 12, 2024

From my senior year at Shrine High School. A woman gazes into a mirror that reveals a young girl trying to appear much older than she is — a piece about the gap between the self we project and the self still inside.

Shrine High School Art – 2023/24

"Auric" by Sylvia Stepp — tiny figure atop a hill facing a massive humanoid looming behind it.

Auric

Sylvia Stepp / January 12, 2024

From my senior year at Shrine High School. A tiny figure has climbed a hill to meet a massive humanoid looming behind it — a study in scale and the quiet courage of standing before something vast.

Shrine High School Art – 2023/24

"Llama" by Sylvia Stepp — winged woman, curly orange hair, yellow and purple background; 2024 Scholastic Gold Key.

Llama - 2024 Scholastic Gold Key Winner

Sylvia Stepp / January 12, 2024

2024 Scholastic Gold Key winner, Southeast Michigan & Thumb Region. Llama — a winged woman with curly orange hair against a vivid yellow and purple background — one of the first characters from my original-character universe, made during my senior year at Shrine High School to explore unconventional color.

Shrine High School Art – 2023/24

"Hand & Heart" by Sylvia Stepp — hand offering a red heart on green and grey botanicals; 2024 Scholastic Silver Key.

Hand & Heart - 2024 Scholastic Silver Key Winner

Sylvia Stepp / January 12, 2024

This work was selected for a 2024 Scholastic Silver Key for the Southeast Michigan & Thumb Region. Botanical and color symbolism were central influences for me, especially in this piece. I wanted the deep, muted red of the heart to stand in contrast with the greens and greys of the background. Together, they reflect the inner conflict of someone learning to trust—offering their “heart” while still wrestling with the vulnerability that comes with it.

"Still Life" by Sylvia Stepp — skull atop two books, bones, two gourds, a woman's face, sheer scarf with stars, and fur.

Still Life

Sylvia Stepp / July 14, 2023

A layered still life — a skull atop two books, bones, gourds, a woman’s face, a sheer star-patterned scarf, and fur — a study in texture and the symbolic weight of everyday and mythic objects.

"Cans & Brushes - Still Life" by Sylvia Stepp — paint can with brush on top, two brushes in front, gas can with handle.

Cans & Brushes - Still Life

Sylvia Stepp / July 15, 2022

A still life of working tools — a paint can topped with a brush, two more brushes on the ground, and a gas can with handle and screw top — a study in metal, wood, and the texture of practical objects.

"Fear in my Head" by Sylvia Stepp — woman's head in a clear bowl-helmet, sharks around, bubbles from her mouth.

Fear in my Head

Sylvia Stepp / July 15, 2022

This image was made in response to a prompt about the personal impact of the pandemic. A woman wears a clear bowl as a helmet — her head submerged in water with sharks circling, air bubbles rising from her mouth — a literal vision of fear as something you live inside, struggling to breathe.

"Circus Performer" by Sylvia Stepp — young girl with freckles and curly hair, swirls of smoke magic; CCS Zine cover.

Circus Performer

July 15, 2022

Selected for the cover of the 2022 CCS Pre-College Zine. A young circus performer with freckles and curly hair conjures magic through swirls of smoke.
